Fence Cost Calculator
A fence's price is mostly its linear feet times a per-foot rate that swings with material and height — then gates, terrain, soil, and old-fence removal nudge it. This estimator counts the posts, panels, and concrete too, so you can see where the money goes. Last updated July 1, 2026.

- Assumes a closed rectangular run (4 corners, no open ends).
- Post holes sized to the local frost line (6 in) with a 2 ft minimum embed.
- Permits vary by city; deed/HOA restrictions are common. Front-yard fences are often limited to ~4 ft.

Fence cost FAQ
- How much does a fence cost per linear foot in 2026?
- Most residential fences run about $20–$60 per linear foot installed for wood or vinyl, and roughly $10–$40 for chain-link. Height, terrain, gates, and old-fence removal move the number within that band.
- How many posts and how much concrete will I need?
- Post count depends on spacing (about 8 ft for wood, 6 ft for vinyl/aluminum, 10 ft for chain-link) plus a post at each corner and gate. Each post typically takes one to two 80 lb bags of concrete, sized to your local frost line.
- Does removing an old fence add much?
- Removal and disposal usually add a few dollars per linear foot on top of the new fence. The calculator adds it as a separate line item when you flag it.
