Methodology & sources
Source dataset: ENERGY STAR certified products data — Air-Source Heat Pumps (data.energystar.gov, w7cv-9xjt), refreshed from the EPA's daily-updated certified-products dataset; page updated July 19, 2026. Percentiles use linear interpolation over every certified model's SEER2/HSPF2 rating, rounded to one decimal. “Cold-climate rated” and “Most Efficient” shares come straight from ENERGY STAR's own certification flags on each listing.
These are the exact percentile bands behind the tier bands (standard, high, premium) in our HVAC cost calculator: standard is SEER2 14.3–15.9, high is 16–18.4, and premium is 18.5 and up — so this report and the calculator's certified-models picker can never disagree. Full detail is on the methodology and data sources pages.
