Kilowatt (kW)
A unit of power equal to 1,000 watts — used to size a solar system (e.g. an 8 kW array).
Solar systems are sized in kilowatts of capacity: an 8 kW system is roughly twenty 400-watt panels. Capacity (kW) is different from energy produced (kWh) — how many kWh a kW produces depends on your local peak sun hours, roof orientation, and system losses. Most homes install somewhere between 6 kW and 12 kW.
