Engineered wood siding — the category LP SmartSide owns the way James Hardie owns fiber cement — costs $6 to $15 per square foot installed in 2026, or $600 to $1,500 per square. Run our reference two-story house through the engine and it lands at $21,065–$52,824 (mid $35,144), or $23,393–$59,034 (mid $39,025) once the old siding comes off. Now the part most buying guides get backwards: in our dataset engineered wood is not the cheap way to get out of vinyl and skip Hardie. It prices about $3,500 above fiber cement on the same walls.
The rate, and what it already covers
Siding is quoted per square foot installed — material plus labor — and ordered by the square, 100 sq ft of coverage. These are the 2026 rates in the dataset behind our siding cost calculator:

That rate carries housewrap, starter strip, corner trim, flashing, and fasteners. It does not carry tear-off, the permit, or the sheathing repair a crew finds behind your old siding. The takeoff, line by line
Our reference home is the one every state page uses: 150 ft of footprint perimeter, 19 ft grade-to-eave walls, a gable roof, 12 windows, 2 doors, and a garage door. The takeoff runs 2,850 sq ft of wall plus 225 sq ft of gable triangles, minus 200 sq ft for openings (the model returns only 75% of an opening's area — trim and cuts eat the rest), for 2,875 sq ft net. Add the 12.5% average waste factor and you order 3,234 sq ft, or 32.3 squares.

Against fiber cement, it's a premium — not a discount
Half the internet files engineered wood as "Hardie's cheaper cousin." Our rates say the opposite. Same house, same waste, same crew, only the material changes:

Engineered wood costs 42% more than vinyl and 11% more than fiber cement on our reference walls, and lands $7,000 under real cedar. That ordering is stable across every house size we price. It won't match every local market — some contractors quote LP meaningfully under Hardie because they install more of it and cut faster — but if your engineered wood bid comes in thousands below a fiber cement bid, check the wall area behind each quote before you credit the material. So what does the premium buy? Mostly a lighter, faster, less regulated install and a genuinely wood-looking wall. LP's own product comparison puts engineered wood at roughly half the weight per square foot of fiber cement, and it cuts with an ordinary carbide woodworking blade — no crystalline silica, so the dust-collection requirement that governs cutting fiber cement board doesn't apply to it. Our data still assigns 50% of installed cost to labor for both materials, which on engineered wood's higher rate works out to about $5.00/sq ft of crew time against fiber cement's $4.50. You are paying more for the easier product, which is an unusual trade and worth knowing before you sign.
What SmartGuard is, and what the warranty actually promises
LP SmartSide is aspen strands treated in the SmartGuard process — zinc borate for termites and fungal decay, waxes and resins for water, and a resin-saturated overlay — then pressed into board. The commercially meaningful part is the paper: the 5/50 limited warranty covers 100% of labor and materials for five years, then prorated material replacement through year 50, and it explicitly covers hail damage up to 1.75 inches in diameter.
Read that hail clause twice if you live in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, or Oklahoma. Our state notes for all four say the same thing — the insurance-claim cycle drives the replacement market there, and impact tolerance is the first specification, not the last. A warranty that names a stone diameter is a different instrument from one that doesn't.
Prefinished or primed — and the 180-day clock
ExpertFinish is LP's factory-finished line, and it carries a 15-year limited finish warranty on top of the 50-year substrate coverage (U.S. LUMBER's product summary). Primed board is cheaper on the invoice and comes with a deadline: LP requires at least one coat of 100% acrylic latex over the factory primer, applied within 180 days of installation, for warranty compliance.
That deadline is the one thing to hold your contractor to in writing. A crew that hangs primed board in October and leaves the painting to "spring" has quietly moved your house toward month seven. Pick engineered wood when you want the deep wood grain without cedar's maintenance bill, when you're in a hail state and the 1.75-inch clause means something to your insurer, or when your house is in the cold Upper Midwest, where our state notes for Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas all flag engineered wood's cold-weather stability against vinyl that embrittles. Skip it if you're optimizing purely on price — vinyl saves $10,478 on our reference house and fiber cement saves $3,493 — or if you're in a wildfire-code area, where ignition-resistant cladding narrows the field to fiber cement, stucco, or treated products.
Honest scope: these numbers estimate wall area from your footprint, and they exclude hidden rot, sheathing replacement, and structural repair found at tear-off.
